Prime Directive by Casey Dorman is the second book in the Voyages of the Delphi series. The book explores the travels of the Delphi crew — a group of highly intelligent machines who visit other planets for observation and learning. Their journey leads them to the cities of Sheraldi and Clellon, where they discover a brewing war between the two. The war results from the practices and beliefs of those in authority and how they treat those who disagree. What happens when an external body comes to destroy both the Sheraldians and Clellons because of their minerals? Will the Delphi crew, whose values rest on no interference with people’s culture, stand, or will they help in the fight against the external body? Read this book to find out more.

I found the book to be fantastic even though I had not read Book 1 of the Voyages of the Delphi series. The author did an excellent job of ensuring that one mustn’t read the first to understand the entire dealings in this second book. Some foundational elements were included in this book, which helped in filling some supposed gaps in the storyline. That was an excellent job from the author.

The author starts a new scene with the first few words in bold letters. I love it, as it boldly highlights to the readers that a new scene is taking place. It isn’t just limited to a new chapter; it is also done for paragraphs in between chapters.

Throughout the book, the author ensured that all thoughts not spoken out were in italics. This helps the reader differentiate between spoken and unspoken words. The storyline itself progressed smoothly. The author was ready to take the readers from point A to point B without much stress and with little confusion.

The book was exceptionally edited. However, the organizational structure could be better. While it may take up lots of space, every conversation in quotation marks should have started on the next line. They shouldn’t be written together with the main narrative. This is a minor issue, though.

If you love adventures, Prime Directive is the one for you because of its grand narrative. I rate it five out of five stars.

I like it when an author can write multiple books in a series and make them strong enough to stand on their own without labouring previous details too much. It sounds like Dorman got this just right.

Great review.

The first book of this series seemed like a a fascinating novel that offers food for thought about artificial intelligence. This sequel seems to expand those themes. I'll look into the whole series. Thank you for your great review!
