Blood Song by Robert Mullin, is a standalone prequel novella and is a backstory of Dania, a popular character from the book Bid the Gods Arise.

Dania is a young cut-purse who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. She is feisty and strong-willed but she also has an obstinate and wild streaks that got her in trouble on one too many occasions. Determined to go home to her caravan family, Dania schemes her way out of her owner’s premises only to be caught and punished heavily. Following her little fiasco, her owner dismisses her for being too troublesome. Her life takes an unexpected turn when Farel, a gladiator trainer, buys her. Farel believes she’s a natural born fighter so he trains her relentlessly in hopes that one day she will be a fair match against the most savage and brutal gladiators in the pit.

This is an incredibly well written, fast paced novella with a smoothly laid out plot. The character development is superb. The author created characters that were likeable and diverse and I found myself rooting for them easily. There were a lot of fighting and sword-slashing scenes in the story so this novella is not for the faint of heart.

It’s heartbreaking to see Dania's innocence stripped away from her completely at such a young age. Her experiences hardened her and forced her to grow up way before her time. On a lighter note, I revel in those few moments where Dania’s childish antics surfaced. Seeing glimpses of her young and carefree self is such a breath of fresh air. I also love that she built bonds with the other trainees. Kathke, my other favorite character, took Dania under her wing and guided her since day one.

I really love the heroine in this story. Knowing the enormity of the hardships she went through at such a young age, it’s deeply satisfying to watch her morphed from the little slave girl she once was to a prized and feared Blood Goddess that she turned into.

Dania’s backstory is interesting to say the least and I’m glad that I can carry on reading about her as a full-blown Blood Goddess in Bids the Gods Arise. This story brought out a roller coaster of emotions in me and I’m rather surprised of how invested I’ve become with the characters. I give this story a 4 out of 4 stars rating and I recommend this novella to those who love a quick but riveting read.
