Review of The Light of Infinite Memories

The Light of Infinite Memories, written by Aziza Hon, is a book that includes aliens and timelines played out in an era of hunger and suffering produced by the war in Afghanistan. The book features other countries like Germany and the United States of America, but most of its characters and scenes take place in Afghanistan.
This fiction contains the works of the Ayyan aliens, who try their best to save humanity by bringing light to the world. They achieve this by sending several people to the past in order to repair the damage in the future. The protagonists of the novel, Najiba and Mariam, find themselves in a different world they never knew existed in the present and are shocked when they realize that they have stepped into the past. They realize that they are not the only ones to suffer this as they meet Aviva the Wise, who has spent years in this past century after finding herself there decades ago. Unlike Aviva, they do not sit still but work towards going back to their lives and homes in the present, and with the help of the Ayyan aliens telling and teaching them to spread the light that they have found in this past century, they go back to their homes, returning later to make sure they get this light and spread it to the world, which they hope will restore peace to the world.
While reading this book, I really appreciated the fact that the book noted historic times like the Italy-Turkey War of 1911, Hitler’s Nazi Germany, and the dictatorship era of 1939. By adding these times to the setting of the book, the author was able to enlighten and educate her readers on these notable historic periods. I also found the drawings in the book delightful in a way. Above all these, I loved how the author was able to depict the war state of the Afghans that festered for more than a decade, which was an eye-opener to the fate of these citizens at such a time.
There were, however, some things and events I didn’t like in the book. First, the plot of the book was slow to develop; I was almost halfway through the book and had not caught on to what the book was really about. Secondly, the book was not professionally edited, which was evident in its poor paragraphing, grammatical errors, and numbering of the pages that ran into the body of the book. Also, there were so many side characters in the book that, in my opinion, were not relevant to the plot of the book, making the book difficult to comprehend.
I rate this book three out of five stars, as I believe it’s a good story that has potential if the storyline is better developed and there is less of a jump from one minor character to the next. Also, if it is better written and edited properly, it will turn out to be a great read. However, I was compelled to remove a star due to the number of errors in it and another due to the negatives I pointed out earlier. I will recommend this book to lovers of science fiction, extraterrestrial life, and readers who truly love and enjoy women as heroines in a novel.
