Imagine the shock Dr. Jedediah Coxswain, an archeologist from Montgomery College, felt when a few volunteers unearthed a fossilized Neanderthal wearing a watch-like gear. Because "Neanderthals rarely wore watches," as his colleague Dr. Kevin Lackey noted. But that feeling was soon overshadowed when a group of 'goons' kidnapped and tortured Dr. Coxswain to learn the whereabouts of the "watch." The story that follows blends elements of quantum mechanics, history, archaeology, Norse mythology, and criminal investigation.

In The Well-Dressed Neanderthal by Francis Xavier Carmody, F.B.I. agent Ian Magee and his partner Shawn Fahey look into the sudden disappearance of the archeologist. Ian Magee is also Dr. Coxswain's brother-in-law and an X-Files fan. Ian continues his search despite their Chief's orders to stop the investigation and chances upon multiple Nordic people with fair skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair. If you want to learn whether there is a link between Dr. Coxswain's disappearance and the rapid increase in the Nordic population in Woodlands, Texas, you must read the book. This work contains subtle humor, well-developed characters, and convincing dialogue. Agent Ian Magee is ruefully dubbed as an 'X-Files enthusiast' by his boss's boss, and that is just one example of the humor used. The author implements a narrative style that offers insight into a number of the characters and skillfully connects various elements of the narrative in the end. The story contains constant references to different elements of Norse mythology, and I found the glossary at the end helpful. The book has some profanities, but their uses are justified given the circumstances. Though love booms in the story, there is no erotic content. Given that the story's primary events occurred in 2020, I liked how the author included post-covid circumstances.

The book has four main sections, and each chapter begins with a quote from a famous personality. The author's intentional inclusion of minute details like car makes and models for each person adds to the vivid description of situations and gives insight into the characters. The book, however, is not error-free. However, the errors are mostly missing quotation marks or misused capitalization and do not hamper the reading pace. This fast-paced thriller deserves 4 out of 5 despite the errors.

I highly recommend this book to both mythology enthusiasts and crime thriller readers. People interested in archeology, history, and technology will also enjoy reading this book.

The fact that a Neanderthal was found with what seems to look like a watch is actually intriguing. Apparently, this secret becomes the center of the story. I would love to know how that happened and if it truly was an actual watch. The presence of humor is already encouraging.
