Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
This is the first installment of the series and an introduction to this world. It’s a fantasy world where magic exists. As someone who is into magic and mythical realms, I immensely enjoyed this book.
Galen Bray, after escaping his war-torn homeland, seeks refuge in Voulhire, where his great uncle owns a forge, unaware of the dangers of the city and what awaits him there. The country’s economy was at its peak, and they were entering their golden age, but they were constantly under attack from their enemies, Riva Rohavi.
It was extremely interesting to read the prologue about Meldorath and all the mystery around him. Galen first describes the Emperor of Lullabies and his four sons. Since everyone was claiming to be the rightful heir to the throne, the Emperor had an idea and decided to give each of his sons a different piece of territory to govern over with a small army and lots of weaponry, but when is a human ever satisfied? As the Emperor expected, the sons began fighting for each other's land, and the conflict lasted for decades. This provided background information on Galen, including his origins and the state of his homeland.
I especially enjoyed the way Matthew, the author, described the various cities in Voulhire, such as Virko, a dark city but so prosperous, and Soulhire, the capital of Voulhire and the most exquisite gem of history. It really gives your imagination wings.
Another of my favorite aspects of the book is the thorough map at the beginning. In addition to this, the author must have done extensive study since the way he depicted every aspect of this fantasy world was wonderful. The story told from multiple points of view gave this book depth.
Reading this made me feel as though I were watching a movie. The chapters were short and easy to read. The reference guide for words and phrases at the end was quite helpful.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. As I mentioned above, the map, the buildup of this world, the multi-faceted plot, and Matthew’s writing style kept me on my toes the whole time. I can’t say much without giving spoilers, so I’ll just say this: If you are into sci-fi fantasy, you should read it. There’s nothing I dislike about the book, and it was expertly edited. However, it does contain some profanity and crude jokes, so I’d recommend this book to mature readers only.
