What Do You Think, Mr. Collins? by Neal Bialostosky is one of those books that confused me for the first few chapters, but it was so well written and engaging that I kept going in an effort to clarify my confusion. It comes as little surprise that we are introduced to Mr. Collins at the outset. However, despite Mr. Collins's placement as the title character, I found myself being drawn quickly into the lives and backgrounds of many unique and interesting characters throughout the first half of the book. The author’s voice is so engaging that putting the book down to go to sleep was difficult, and I continuously stayed up late! His writing style is sparse, and the chapters go by quickly, which helps maintain an ever-increasing pace to the storyline, even as it moves through different characters' lives to open windows into all the various aspects of the plot.
Characters are my favorite part of any story, and Mr. Bialostosky delivers some genuinely fantastic ones, ranging from a clueless poser (you’ll meet him early on) to a political terror and a host of other people just trying to do “the right thing” in a world where the choices are less than optimal. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars because it engages the reader in a short course over relatively few pages while tackling the extraordinarily timely and imminent topic of Artificial Intelligence and its potential interface with humankind in the coming years. While a glance at the Table of Contents might lead the reader to assume a fantasy plot with character names and chapter titles like Rumplestiltskin and The Black Hole, I assure you this is an excellent read for anyone who wonders at the intersection of human and technology and what it could possibly mean for our combined futures. What Do You Think, Mr. Collins? delivers an excellent read with an exceptional message lightly veiled in a well-crafted, thought-provoking plotline that bounces the reader from character to character like a teenager in the 21st century on social media!
