Vedana by Kevin and Eric Ferrone shows us what happens when power gets out of hand.

Fernway watched as his mother's body burned, and the memory stayed imprinted on his mind. When he got the opportunity to train his powers, he promised himself that he would never again be too powerless to stop anybody he loved from dying. When that promise was tested, he learned there might be some truth to the warnings he ignored.

I loved the authors' ability to bring scenes to life. The planet of Vi'Graha felt like it could be a real place. The descriptions were so vivid that I could almost see the colored leaves and feel the wind blowing. The action scenes had the perfect amount of detail — not too much to be boring and not too little to give you an incomplete picture. The story wasn't told from one character's perspective, so we had a balance between people's actions and their thought processes while carrying out those actions.

I loved the storyline of this book. I rarely find my emotions so engaged while reading a book, especially fiction. I alternated between compassion, anger, frustration, and tears. I occasionally screamed, hoping the characters would hear me. I genuinely found Maw and Sadok terrifying, mainly because their brand of evil was so insidious. They were antagonists with no conscience, and you knew they would stop at nothing because nothing was beneath them. I felt for Lydia; she was driven by grief and robbed of choice. I also felt for others who found themselves in dire situations.

The book progressed very quickly, and a lot of things were happening at the same time. This added to the exciting quality of the story. However, some aspects of the story could have been more fleshed out. For example, Fernway's abrupt change from a somewhat normal teenage boy to how he ended up in this book felt rushed. I didn't find this enough to remove any points from the book, though.

I found some errors. However, considering the book's length (517 pages), it was professionally edited. I'd rate Vedana 5 out of 5 stars because there was no reason to deduct any points. I'd recommend it to lovers of action-packed fantasy stories.
