Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a unique book. It is an homage to both fantasy and spoof works. It does not take itself too seriously while exploring the many options within the fantasy genre. The book follows the mighty Thoral Fist Wielder as he adventures with his best friend Brad, who happens to be a talking fish. Initially moving from place to place, the book slowly begins to have consequences that could affect all the worlds!

As a somewhat novice fantasy reader, I fear a lot of the finer points of humour may have been lost on me. However, there was still plenty to enjoy in the book, even for me! Playing on the many tropes of fiction, the often predictable ways of writing, and the certain death situations that somehow the hero survives, translates well for any reader. Alongside that, hidden amongst the silliness and jokes, there is a good story contained within the book and some great character development.

There was not much to dislike in this book. Perhaps the only negative is the somewhat unrelated start of the book. While I understand it is important to grow a character and introduce the world they are in, the author could have done so better. The first third or so of the book feels mostly like small independent stories, and it is not until later that it is clear the book is working towards a more joined-up story. This is a small criticism, and I am sure it would not stop anyone from enjoying the book.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book tells an enthralling tale while also poking fun at itself and the genres it represents. It takes itself just seriously enough with its storytelling that it does not feel like just a spoof making fun of fantasy and does well to keep you engaged in an ever-shifting story. It is flawlessly edited and contains no errors.

I would recommend this book not just to fantasy lovers but also to fans of historical fiction or action books. While there are jokes that may be aimed more at fantasy readers, there are plenty that are common to other genres.
