In his captivating novel "Sent to Watch," David J. Lebenstein explores the complexities of first contact and the ethical dilemmas tied to technology. The narrative revolves around the intricate mission of Unni Vlaytork and her fellow agents, Ori Svavapass and Urelt Sraymlat. Their task was to infiltrate the British Empire during the Regency of Prince George to assess Earth's readiness for formal contact and potential membership in the Confederation of Civilised Planets.

Lebenstein expertly weaves a tapestry of suspense and tension throughout the narrative. He crafts multi-dimensional characters in Vlaytork, Ori, and Urelt, portraying them as intelligent and capable agents with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.

A notable highlight of the story is the moral conundrum of first contact. The agents are bound by strict non-interference protocols, yet they face the crucial decision of whether to forewarn the British Empire about the looming threat posed by the hostile Vittmians, another alien empire. This ethical quandary adds depth and substance to the narrative.

Additionally, Lebenstein's vivid portrayal of the British Empire during Prince George's Regency era immerses readers in the intricacies of the time, shedding light on its political and social dynamics.
However, while the novel excels in most aspects, the ending feels somewhat hurried. Given the rich development of the plot and characters, a more extended exploration of the climax and resolution would have been welcomed.

In terms of editing, "Sent to Watch" is meticulously crafted with barely any typos or errors, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted reading experience. Lebenstein's attention to detail in both storytelling and editing adds to the overall quality of the book.

In conclusion, "Sent to Watch" is a meticulously crafted and thought-provoking science fiction masterpiece that will undoubtedly captivate genre enthusiasts. It delves deep into pertinent themes like first contact and the moral implications of advanced technology. With its intricate storyline and multi-faceted characters, this novel unquestionably deserves the highest praise. I found it to be an enthralling and flawless read, and I confidently rate it 5 out of 5 stars. There was simply no reason to deduct any stars from this exceptional work.
