We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in the We are Voulhire series. The story follows Galen, a young refugee from the war-torn Land of Princes, who inherits his uncle's property in the rich and beautiful land of Voulhire. But little does he know of the hidden secrets of this land. The fierce rebels of Riva Rohavi seek to overthrow Voulhire's power. Additionally, the recent turmoil in the city of Hillport has left many wondering about its future. The city lost its two rulers within three months. Lord Orlin, the first ruler, was accused of being a pedophile, while Lord Meldorath, probably the most powerful mage on earth, was practicing magic on people. The mysterious disappearance of Lord Meldorath has left many unanswered questions. Some believe he's dead, while others suspect he's still alive and plotting his return. Now, King Wilhelm Arcolo of Voulhire sent Lord Eldus to take charge of the city of Hillport and make it an economic power. Will Lord Eldus succeed in achieving his goal? Is Meldorath still alive? What lies ahead in Galen's future? You’ll need to read the book to find out.

The main purpose of this book is to introduce the imaginary world of Voulhire. The land is described skillfully, making it easy for the reader to understand its structure. There is also a map of Voulhire's geography at the beginning of the book to help readers cross-check details. The book also includes a reference guide of "words and phrases that might sound strange to newcomers of Voulhire" at the end.

The book has a variety of characters, all of whom are deeply developed. They are so unique that it’s difficult to mix them up. One character that stands out is Alabaster, whose magic and personality are so strange that they make him unforgettable. The book's magic system is also noteworthy. Besides common types of magic, like fire and ice, the author created some unique ones. The most iconic was bio magic, which is "the practice of magic that concerns direct manipulations of the body on a cellular level, altering the nature of bodily function," as the author describes it. It was once used to heal the sick but is now deemed a violation of the body.

There is nothing to dislike about this book. It is well-written, and the description of cities and characters is enjoyable. The plot is intriguing and mysterious, filled with twists and turns that keep the reader curious. There is also some irony that made me laugh, which I found to be a great addition. All these elements attest to the amount of work that has gone into the book. The editing was also exceptional, as I found no errors. For all these reasons, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend reading this book to fantasy lovers. The author skillfully created a mysterious story that kept me engaged from the outset and left me eager to read the next installment of the series.
