Umbral Ten by Douglas Murphy is a science fiction book that has very strong fantasy elements. This is the first book in the Khaldalia Chronicles series.

Lady Theodosia Archmail, who is usually called Theo, suddenly woke up because she was woken up by Rook. She didn't remember at all why she was unconscious and didn't know where and why she was wearing clothes for a special ceremony. Getting help from Rook, she has to go to a tree called the Tree of Mystery to meet Jakob, Rook's friend, who also has to go there. She had to recover her memories back by facing many adventures ahead. Meanwhile, Lance de Orleans is facing Archbishop Horatio, who seems to be possessed by a demon and always asks for The Holy of Holies. When they all meet, seems like they have to face the same enemy. What is their relationship? And what influence does The Incarnate have on all these events? Are they going to be a team to have the battle with the unknown?

What I like about this book is the imaginative storyline. The story presented in this book makes this book difficult to put down. I'm curious about each chapter as to what really happens. Although many fantasies are created, such as the existence of witches and spells cast by several characters, the author also combines his imagination with structures and elements in Christianity, for example, the archbishop, the nun, the church, and demons that possess humans.

There was nothing I didn't like in this book. The existing characters are developed perfectly. There is a lot of action and journey experienced by each character which makes the story more interesting. The details provided by the author made the story feel more alive, making me feel like I was experiencing the characters' journey, especially Theo. The plot in this book also feels like it flows naturally.

All things considered; I would give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The language used is easy to understand, and the storyline is rich and very interesting. I didn't find any significant grammar or typo errors in this book. It seems professionally edited. I would recommend this book for those who really like fantasy, action, journey, mystery, wizards, and thrillers. Even though I saw the way of the battle as a little bit brutal, it still fit to be read by young adults.
