Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel about the fictional world of Voulhire, a land full of magic, mystery, and untamed beauty. This book was a great read. It's an enchanting journey into an imaginative world with compelling characters and exceptional atmospheric scenes. Voulhire has outstanding scenery, physical allure, and culture captivating you as you read.
Having experienced tragedies, war and starvation young Galen Bray, a young refugee from the Land of the Princes, traveled to Magnum Caelum, a town in Voulhire to aid his great uncle. Unfortunately, his uncle passed before he arrived and Galen was faced with new challenges as he navigated life in Voulhire as a blacksmith with Rowan, his uncle’s executor. Galen is given a new opportunity to live a better life but trouble is brewing on the horizon. After the arrest and suspected suicide of Meldorath, a mage who had mastered the art of magic abused it to gain dominion over his subjects. Eldus, the new lord of Hillport, was assigned the responsibility of protecting the town from Riva Rohavi and uncovering the truth behind many terrible crimes.
I enjoyed how engaging and descriptive this book was. I felt transported through reading as there was a sense of realness to this book. Excepting the magical aspects, the behaviors of those in charge were somewhat similar to what is experienced in today's society. The author created an atmospheric scene, trapping me in a rich tapestry of sights, sounds, and emotions. I loved that the characters were well-developed. I was able to follow the storyline, although sometimes the pacing of the story felt uneven, as some scenes were dragged out while others were rushed. However, that did not detract much from the overall reading experience. The author maintained a delicate balance between action-packed sequences and moments of introspection, and as the plot twists and turns, I was on the edge, eager to discover the fate of each character. However, at times I found the complexity of the plot overwhelming, and there are moments when certain arcs feel underdeveloped. I would have preferred if some scenes weren’t rushed, but the world-building in this novel is commendable, as the author created a vivid and immersive world.
I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because the shortcomings of this book pale in comparison to the book's ability to captivate and engage me as I eagerly kept reading. I would say that this book was professionally edited. While the story mainly flowed smoothly, there were occasional instances where inconsistencies surfaced although, they didn’t overshadow the overall charm, allure of the narrative, or enjoyment of the book.
I would recommend this book to teens and young adults, or anyone for that matter, who loves engaging stories surrounding magic, mysteries, and adventures. This book is great for those who embrace the magic of storytelling or are just seeking a captivating escape and a thrilling adventure.
