Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is part of a series penned by Matthew Tysz. This suspenseful narrative revolves around a character named Galen, who, compelled by the conflicts in his war-torn homeland, embarks on a journey to a place known as Voulhire. Upon arriving in Voulhire, he settles in a quaint town called Magnum Caelum, the former residence of his late uncle. Galen inherits both a house and a blacksmith shop from his uncle. However, Galen's transition to Voulhire takes an unexpected turn as the land conceals hidden mysteries and challenges.
In Voulhire, a feared magician named Meldorath was once a significant figure. He orchestrated a coup against Lord Orlin, taking control and becoming the new lord of Hillport. However, the king, Wilhelm Arcolo, noticed Meldorath's sinister intentions of using magic for harmful experiments on citizens. Consequently, with the help of associates, the king arrested and imprisoned Meldorath, appointing a new leader for the citizens. The book delves into how Galen navigates his new surroundings and poses questions about the new leader's intentions, the potential reappearance of Meldorath, and more mysteries within the narrative. For more details, read Matthew Tysz's book.
I enjoyed several aspects of this book. Rowan's patience with Galen as he adapted to his new surroundings and his great sense of humour stood out. My preferred character was King Wilhelm, who epitomises a robust and unbiased leader. Matthew Tysz skillfully developed the characters, and his clear indications of scene changes made the narrative easy to follow. Using a character introduction page added to the book's accessibility, providing a quick reference when needed. I also appreciated Lord Eldus's efforts to connect with the people of Hillport, demonstrating the qualities of a good leader.
The book's character development stands out as its most compelling aspect. The author links each character's growth to the story's central theme. The narrative doesn't rely heavily on a single character; instead, suspense is crafted around various characters. Even when a character's story ends, it doesn't conclude the tale but introduces new layers of suspense. Early on, when I thought Lord Eldus was the beacon in Hillport, the author's unexpected twist astonished me.
I found nothing about this book unpleasant. It was error-free and exceptionally well-edited. The book is brief, and its formatting, including fonts, paragraphs, and sentence flow, was well-balanced. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a masterpiece, earning a five out of five stars rating. I recommend it to sci-fi enthusiasts, although those opposed to mysticism, witchcraft, or magic might not enjoy it.
