The book Sent to Watch by David J. Lebenstein is a science fiction novel about aliens from alternate planets, all known as Earth, surveilling other planets in the solar system around them. Many of the planets have joined forces to create an interstellar Confederation that works together to keep out attackers. Members of this team are able to be sent to certain planets as field agents to watch and report back their findings to the Confederation team. This novel mainly follows two characters, Ori and Unni, who are field agents on Earth 48, which is the earth that is known to us readers as home. Agents on other planets are required to follow the main law, “sent to watch but not to affect,” as they must vow to not do anything to change the course of the planet as it builds culture and technology.

Overall, I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This story goes beyond what the typical science fiction novel would include, as it takes place in the past instead of in the future as most do. I enjoyed turning the pages to find out what would come next, how would Unni and Ori react and plan for the future with each change that is brought about.

This book is overall positive as it is an enjoyable read with well-developed, likable characters. The novel included so many aspects of history, science fiction, romance, and thought-provoking events that leave readers to question, “What if this were true today?” The many genres included in one novel make it so many readers can enjoy the story regardless of interest.

The book did not have many negative aspects to contribute to the rating. This book was mostly edited as only a few typos were found. I did have a slightly difficult time following characters and places with the made up names, however it was helpful for the author to include a glossary in the beginning to help the readers identify this other language included in the text.

I would recommend this book for any lover of science fiction, history, and/or romance. All three genres being included make this novel one that can be enjoyed by many.
