Review of Homecoming
Homecoming is the second book in the Five Worlds series by Jude Austin and is a science fiction thriller. After their escape from cloning company GenTech, Kata and Project Tau are on the run from the long reaches of those who want to capture and use them for their purposes. The two barely survived their involuntary imprisonment and torture at the hands of the sadistic GenTech doctors. Battered and bruised, they wonder who they can trust to help expose what happened to them and secure their freedom.
Kata is a broken young man after he escapes from GenTech. With his identity and humanity stripped away, he wonders how he will put the shattered pieces of his life back together. Kata focuses on exposing GenTech to gain their freedom and believes the Trandellian government will help them.
After reading the first installment of this series, Project Tau, I became invested in this incredible tale of survival and human rights. Homecoming continues that story with heartbreaking twists on every page. I was impressed how the author could continue such strong character development of Kata and Tau in the outside world. They experience changes in their friendship, make new friends, and begin to deal with their trauma. I enjoyed meeting the new characters and felt their introductions did not feel rushed or forced. I enjoyed learning more about the history of the various worlds, especially Akkhen and Trandellia. Austin also successfully introduced us to new planets at a level where I could picture the landscape in my mind's eye.
I could not put this book down. The writer has a way of making the characters jump off of the page and into your heart. I found myself experiencing a wave of emotions from chapter to chapter, and my love for Kata and Tau grew with every page. The book contains endless excitement and has strong character development. It is also flawlessly edited. Since Homecoming is a sequel, I recommend that those interested read Project Tau first.
Due to those reasons, I give Homecoming the full rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Those interested in science fiction books with themes of morality, humanity, and human cloning will find this book thought-provoking. There is consistent use of strong language in the book, but for me, it did not take away from the story. Due to mentions of sexual assault and eating disorders, I would not recommend this book to sensitive readers. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!
