Boy, known as such throughout his life, bears no name and lacks knowledge of his parents. His physical deformity, a hunch on his back, subjects him to continuous bullying from both the local children and his mistress, Ooana. Boy's existence revolves around servitude to his master, Arthur, residing on their farm since his earliest memories. In the town of Geneva, boys reaching a certain age join patrols against the Darklings, notorious for abducting people, particularly in the impoverished Old Town. On a crucial night, the Prefect, overseeing the town with the mayor, forms groups for the patrol. However, due to his deformity, Boy struggles to find companionship.

As Boy traverses the old slums with a group, he stumbles upon a skirmish involving Alex Helsing and Darklings. Joining forces, they emerge victorious. Meanwhile, in a different location, Darklings ambush men escorting the mayor's daughter, Luinita, and her attendant, Vilencia. With the men slain, only Boy and Alex remain to rescue them. Vilencia is captured, but Luinita is saved, marking the commencement of a steadfast friendship between the trio. Alex christens Boy with the name Loial, and they engage in numerous battles. The central mystery revolves around the origin and control of the Darklings.

The novel unfolds as a captivating exploration of friendship, love, greed, and societal divisions between the affluent and impoverished. Noteworthy is Alex's disobedience to the Prefect, prioritizing the protection of the poor. The narrative remains intriguing, preventing any chance of boredom. The desire for revelations surrounding Lo's mistress and the heartening development of Arthur's acceptance and combat training for Loial add depth to the plot.
