"Sent to Watch"

David J. Lebenstein's "Sent to Watch" takes readers on an exhilarating journey through time and space, weaving a captivating narrative of agents, diplomacy, and the struggle between noninterference and the greater good. Set in a parallel universe where the Interplanetary Intelligence Service operates, the story centers around some agents: Unni Vlaytork, Ori Svavapass, and Urelt Sraymlat, as they infiltrate the British Empire during the Regency of Prince George on "Earth 48.”

The Noninterference Protocol serves as the guiding principle for agents like Unni, Ori, and Urelt, who are tasked with silently observing primitive planets to determine their readiness for contact with the Confederation of Civilized Planets. However, the discovery of a menacing starfaring empire in another galaxy challenges the agents' adherence to noninterference. Faced with the imminent threat, they conceive a daring plan to accelerate Earth 48's technological development, hoping to secure its admission into the Confederation before the invaders arrive.

Lebenstein masterfully blends elements of science fiction, espionage, and political intrigue to create a truly immersive reading experience. The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own motivations and conflicts. Unni, Ori, and Urelt find themselves torn between loyalty to their mission and the desire to protect a vulnerable planet from impending destruction.

The author's detailed world-building transports readers into a parallel Earth, rich with historical context and technological advancements. From the Regency-era British Empire to the complexities of interplanetary politics, "Sent to Watch" seamlessly combines these elements, painting a vivid picture of a multi-dimensional universe.

Lebenstein's writing is engaging and fast-paced, filled with suspense, unexpected twists, and thought-provoking dilemmas. As the agents take risks and navigate the delicate balance between noninterference and intervention, the tension builds, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

"Sent to Watch" is not only a thrilling science fiction novel but also a reflection on ethical dilemmas and the consequences of our actions. It raises compelling questions about the nature of progress, the balance between noninterference and intervention, and the universal struggle for survival against a formidable adversary.
“Sent to Watch” is a must-read thrilling science fiction novel.
