[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "I See You" by Geziena Mallett.]
I See You is a fantasy novel written by Geziena Mallett. The story revolves around the life of Sheera, a unique elf who is a half-breed born to a snow elf mother and a grey elf father. She has inherited her father's striking red eyes and her mother's pale skin. Sheera lived a peaceful life in her mountain village until the ongoing war between snow elves and grey elves destroyed her home and forced her to leave. Seeking refuge in Niehone, the capital city of the snow elves, Sheera discovers that her village is an anomaly and that snow elves and grey elves cannot coexist. Determined to prove the world wrong, Sheera embarks on a quest to bring peace to the people. Will Sheera succeed in her mission? How will the war end? You’ll need to read the book to find out.
Initially, I had mixed emotions about the book. The first half of the book seemed too simplistic and cliched, with the writing style being too basic. It felt like I was reading something that I had already read before in other books of the same genre. However, as I progressed through the second half of the book, the plot took some unexpected turns that piqued my interest and kept me engaged in the story. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the book offered more than just a typical fantasy read. The ideas behind the story were promising, but unfortunately, they were not explored to their full potential. Some parts of the book felt rushed, and some of the characters' opinions were changed too quickly, which made the plot seem a bit disjointed. The book could have been longer to better flesh out and develop these intriguing ideas.
As I delved into the book, I found myself wanting more descriptions to truly immerse myself in the story. While I understand that some readers may prefer to use their imagination to fill in the gaps, personally, I enjoy a more vivid portrayal of the scenes, characters, and settings. Additionally, the characters themselves felt somewhat incomplete, lacking the depth and development that I typically seek in a good story. Furthermore, the history of the elves and the reason behind their ongoing war were only vaguely alluded to, leaving me with a sense of wanting more. I also longed for a detailed map of the world to better understand the geography of the story and visualize it more clearly.
Despite these criticisms, I did not find the book to be a tedious read. However, I do believe that it would be better suited for a young adult audience or someone new to the fantasy genre. The book shows a lot of potential, but it needs some refinement in the areas mentioned above to truly shine. On a positive note, I must commend the exceptional editing, as I did not come across any errors. Overall, I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
