A Southern Enchantress is a spell-binding novel penned by Deborah Trahan. Set in Pass Christian and New Orleans, the book tells us the story of the Lafountain women.

In the 1940s, Adelaide Lafountain is a vivacious young lady on the cusp of adulthood. Though her grandma has been urging her to embrace her hoodoo legacy, she is happy with her gift of clairsentience. The beautiful heiress is over the moon when she meets Cash Lamar during her summer vacation in Pass Christian. She has been seeing the handsome young man in her visions for quite some time now.

Suzanne is a gorgeous woman with clairsentient abilities. Just like Addy, she has avoided her hoodoo legacy. In 2012, Suzanne finally divorced her cheating husband. Then, all of a sudden, Max Martin enters her life. She instantly gets attracted to him. However, there is a dark side to him. A malevolent spirit is attached to him. Surprisingly, this spirit has a connection to Suzanne herself. To add to things, Suzanne's mother, Madeleine, and another mysterious spirit start making appearances in her life. Clearly, all is not well in the spirit world.

Will Addy and Suzanne get their happily-ever-afters with Cash and Max respectively? How are Adelaide and Suzanne connected? Will Suzanne be able to right the wrong in the spirit world and embrace her destiny?

Deborah Trahan's A Southern Enchantress is an enchanting book that actually sent chills down my spine. It is hard to believe that it is Trahan's debut novel. She is a brilliant author who enmeshes us in her story with her evocative writing style. New Orleans comes to life in the book. The eccentric culture and sumptuous food of the city is vividly depicted. While reading Addy's story, I felt like I was there with her during the last years of WWII. Trahan beautifully depicts the society, fashion, and music of the 1940s. I love how she captures the emotional repercussions the war had on people. The 2000s are well-portrayed as well. Trahan shows us how Hurricane Katrina devastated lives.

All the characters of A Southern Enchantress are beautifully sketched. The best part is that none of the characters is perfect. My heart went out to Adelaide. She had her flaws. She was ambitious yet headstrong. The way she was treated by people actually broke my heart. Etsy, Addy's sister, appeared to be the most understanding of sisters. However, there was something about her that did not endear her to me. Mimi Jeanne was amazing. She was resilient and always wanted the best for her granddaughters. When she felt helpless, I felt helpless. Suzanne had a difficult upbringing. It was a treat watching her reconnect with her mother and embrace her destiny. Jack Reynolds was an enigma. Max Martin was an antagonist. Yet, there were times when I could almost understand why he did what he did. I believe this is a testament to Deborah Trahan's writing prowess. She makes us connect with all her characters.

I truly enjoyed reading A Southern Enchantress. I did not find anything worth criticizing in this well-edited novel. I especially liked how the author effortlessly glided between the perspectives of different characters. Also, the story seamlessly flowed between the past and the present.

Keeping everything in mind, I rate Deborah Trahan's A Southern Enchantress 5 out of 5 stars. I wholeheartedly believe that this enthralling book deserves a perfect rating. I highly recommend it to fans of supernatural thrillers and historical novels. Readers who enjoy mysteries and family sagas will love this extraordinary novel.
