Review of Skull Duggery Beginning of the Road Riders
Before life began, the Most High designated four men - Raven, Lebin, Dokken, and Ooht - to oversee the universe. Each of the mystical wise men received cosmic powers. For instance, Raven, the firstborn, was given the sight to see both the past and the future. He was also the keeper of the Key of Innocence. When the Most High created the universe, Raven foresaw the holocaust that could bring forth massive destruction. Therefore, Raven asked his brother Ooht to beseech the Most High to allow him to travel to earth to avert the tragedy. What happens when Raven goes to the planet and falls in love with a beautiful woman, Kyliena?
I relished that Skull Duggery Beginning of the Road Riders by Anthony D. Bobo crafted a plot with creatures wielding diverse abilities and roused by distinct agendas. He did a commendable job showing how different capabilities were harnessed to fight a formidable enemy, the Skull Duggery. The contest between the Road Riders and the Skull Duggery is evenly balanced, and I was left rooting for the Road Riders even when things seemed to be going against them. The themes of family, betrayal, and fortitude are brilliantly displayed. It was so heartwarming to witness the sacrifice made by Raven and his wife to save their son's life.
The book contains multiple grammatical errors. The author failed to use speech marks to indicate direct speech. It was challenging as it made it complex to know when dialogues switched and who the speaker was sometimes. Some words were also misspelt: for instance, 'where' was used a couple of times instead of 'were.'
I struggled to keep track of some characters due to their minor contributions to the plot. It resulted due to the myriad of characters deployed. I'm happy to report that there's a glossary displaying the characters. While it slows down the reading experience when referring to the glossary, it is worth it as the author defined their contributions, enabling the reader to keep track of their roles.
In the book's state, I find it difficult to recommend it to an audience. The grammatical issues impede a potentially grand reading experience. Consequently, I'm deducting significant marks and awarding the book 2 out of 5 stars. I couldn't rate it lower because of the well-fleshed-out themes and excellent storyline. Once the issues are addressed, science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts will find the novel spellbinding.
