"Sent to Watch" by David J. Lebenstein is a masterfully crafted historical science fiction novel that seamlessly blends elements of post-Napoleonic England with interplanetary intrigue. The novel's exceptional editing, devoid of errors, contributes to a smooth and immersive reading experience.

Set in a captivating universe, the story predominantly unfolds within post-Napoleonic England while venturing into the realms of other planets. The central premise revolves around extraterrestrial spies tasked with infiltrating leading factions or nations on primitive planets. Their mission is to assess when a planet is culturally and technologically prepared for inclusion in the Confederation of Civilized Planets—a benevolent alliance spanning dozens of earthlike worlds.

Lebenstein skillfully navigates the narrative through the eyes of these alien agents assigned to pivotal Earthly powers such as the British Empire, France, Prussia, Spain, and the fledgling United States of America. Operating under a strict non-interference protocol, these extraterrestrial observers must resist the temptation to influence the civilizations they monitor.

What elevates "Sent to Watch" is its exploration of ethical dilemmas faced by the three agents assigned to the British Empire—a woman and two men. Their adherence to the Noninterference Protocol is tested when they uncover a cruel and aggressive starfaring empire encroaching upon Earth 48. This revelation thrusts them into a conflict that challenges their commitment to mere observation, prompting them to grapple with the moral complexities of their mission.

The narrative unfolds with a seamless blend of historical accuracy and imaginative speculation, offering readers a thought-provoking journey through parallel worlds. Lebenstein's meticulous attention to detail and vivid descriptions enhance the immersive quality of the storytelling. The characters, especially the conflicted agents, are well-developed, contributing to a narrative that engages on both emotional and intellectual levels. There was nothing to dislike about it.

In summary, "Sent to Watch" is a literary gem that earns 5 out of 5 stars. With flawless editing, a compelling plot, and rich character development, David J. Lebenstein delivers a historical science fiction experience that captivates from start to finish. The novel's exploration of ethical quandaries adds depth to the genre, making it a standout work in the realm of speculative fiction.
