D.A. Lascelle's Gods of the Deep is a trio of tales that draw the reader into a paranormal adventure on the high seas. Filled with magic, mystery, and a host of unique characters, Gods of the Deep is a fast-paced and worthy addition to the fantasy genre.

The opening story introduces the reader to Everyn Crowe, Professor of Ethereal Studies at the University of Creatha. When a field study goes awry, Everyn finds himself clinging for dear life on a rock in the middle of the ocean, his only recourse an appeal to the spirits that he has devoted his life to studying. His prayers are answered in the form of the Neptune's Wing, a merchant vessel captained by the strong-willed Rachel Drake, who quickly decides that Everyn's magical skills could be an asset to her business. Together, Everyn and Rachel embark on a perilous journey to unearth a valuable secret, with pirates, demons, and a powerful magician working in concert against them.

The second story, "Heart of the City," takes the reader on another adventure with Everyn, this time in Captain Drake's native land of Langon. In this tale, Everyn aids the cunning Lady Catherine in tracking down an otherworldly killer loose on the streets of a bustling port city. The last story, entitled "The Final Sacrifice," also takes place in Langon, but focuses on an aged storyteller named Melinda.

As a lover of fantasy, I found all three of these stories to be immensely satisfying. The plots of each story were original, well-paced, and full of surprises. Everyn is a three-dimensional protagonist, with a realistic balance of strengths and weaknesses, aided by supporting characters who are also well-developed. I was particularly pleased by the continuous inclusion of strong female characters, whose abilities were often a foil to Everyn's shortcomings.

The writing within this book was quite good overall, with only some minor improvements needed. There were a few typographical errors and run-on sentences, but they did not detract from my enjoyment of these stories. On the contrary, I rather liked the author's writing style, and I ended up learning a few new words as the result of his obviously expansive vocabulary!

Gods of the Deep is a unique and fun collection of fantasy tales, and I give it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to those who are fans of science-fiction and fantasy, particularly those who enjoy pirate stories.

It does sound interesting, however is not a book that I would really enjoy reading. Thanks for the review.

I might just take a look.

I wonder if DA Lascelles writing style is similar to my own?
