David J. Lebenstein's Sent to Watch explores the themes of ethics, authority, and obligation. The story revolves around Major Robert Weatherby, an operative of the Interplanetary Intelligence Service, and his spouse, Unni Vlaytork. Set in a cosmos where numerous planets are under constant surveillance, the couple's responsibility revolves around observing and documenting the behaviours of diverse nations and societies. As they undertake their roles as operatives, they grapple with a multitude of obstacles, ranging from political tensions to the critical need for maintaining secrecy, all while navigating the intricate moral dilemmas intrinsic to their mission. Their journey exposes them to diverse cultures, places them amid oppression and genocide, and compels them to fiercely protect their way of life.

The reason I adore this book is the profound way in which Major Weatherby's scar is intricately intertwined with the narrative. This scar holds immense significance for Weatherby on various levels. Initially, it stands as a symbol of honour, marking his pivotal role in saving the Duke of Wellington's life. However, as the story progresses, the scar takes on a deeper meaning, shaping Weatherby's serious and unyielding demeanour.

It serves as a constant reminder of the physical and emotional trials he endured, contributing significantly to his unwavering determination and resolute character throughout the storyline. This aspect, among others, truly captures my admiration and love for this book. I would recommend this book to science fiction enthusiasts who enjoy thought-provoking stories exploring moral dilemmas within futuristic settings.

Unfortunately, a part of the book I truly disliked was the devastating obliteration of Station 62-1 by the Vittmian warships. This pivotal moment in the narrative starkly unveiled the escalating tensions between the Confederation and the Victorian Empire. The destruction of the station not only resulted in the loss of crucial resources and personnel but also acted as a jarring reminder of the imminent danger posed by the Vittmians. This event significantly raised the stakes for the characters, compelling them to navigate the intensifying conflict and seek ways to shield Earth 48 and the Confederation from further annihilation. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.

I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to its masterful handling of intricate narratives, compelling character arcs, and the seamless integration of themes such as honour, sacrifice, and conflict. Major Weatherby's journey, the evolving tensions among factions, and the moral complexities faced by the characters were utterly captivating. Despite the distressing obliteration of Station 62-1, which heightened the stakes in the story, it further solidified the narrative's intensity and impact, contributing to the book's overall depth. This intricate storytelling and emotional engagement solidify its deserving place as a 5-star read for me.
