Book Review: "We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz

Book Review: "We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz is a fiction novel that takes readers to the fantasy world of Voulhire. The story begins with what seems like a coup happening in a distant land in some parallel universe. Then we are introduced to the country of Voulhire, a rich land filled with magic, mystery, and political unrest.

The author has taken sufficient time to build a detailed world that helps the reader form a picture of the kingdom of Voulhire. Also commendable is the rich character-building of the characters involved in the telling of the story. The protagonist, Galen Bray, a nobody from a war-torn land, suddenly becomes one of the richest and most respected citizens upon reaching the country of Voulhire. Is his inheritance only wealth or something more? Is that something more sinister or magical? All these questions loom around until the end of the book. Another major character, Lord Eldus Alderman, has an air of honor and duty about it. But how much of it is real, and how much of it is for the show? We also come across characters like Meldorath and the King of Voulhire, both of which keep the reader guessing about who the real villain of Voulhire is.

I enjoyed the book thoroughly due to its easy story-telling. The characters seem relatable, even if they are from a mysterious land. The maps provided also helped me see the whereabouts of a land that is not even there. The author has also given links to an online website that sheds more light on the life and culture of Voulhire. There is some obscenity and profanity, and there are also some hidden hints of child abuse and rape in the story. The book has something for everyone. It has suspense, adventure, uncertainty, and the promise of a world far away, which might intrigue anyone reading about it. The author has managed to create a world similar to Hogwarts and Westeros. The book is a good beginning to the Voulhire series.

The book has been edited exceptionally well, as I did not find any errors in the writing. There is nothing to dislike in the book. I would happily give the book five out of five stars, most of it for bringing something new for fantasy-lovers like me. The book has set the stage for the Voulhire series. I would recommend this book to fans of fantasy novels, and I would myself like to read the subsequent books.
