Official Review: Nemesis (Nomad series book 2)

Nemesis: Nomad Series Book 2 by K. A. Finn is an action filled, Science Fiction Novel set outside of Earth in the Outer Sector where the unwanted and rebels have retreated to. The story takes place on Ultar, one of the few thriving colonies left after the destruction the Foundation in Book 1 left behind, and on various ships we come to learn about.
The Nomad, Hunter clans and Ex Foundation members have moved on after the suspected death of Gryffin, the half human, half cyborg Nomad Leader. After witnessing Gryffin's death in book 1, Terra Rush mourns the man who she had come to care for deeply and has had to look ahead to find her own happiness, which she starts to find with Gryffin's brother. In the ten months Gryffin has been gone, the clans have had to work hard to hold the Foundation attacks at bay and protect the people of Ultar. All are shocked when a single ship moves towards Ultar with one person unconscious at the helm. Gryffin. He is back but far from stable. Tortured, battered and relying heavily on his cybernetics, he can barely be trusted and Terra's life is turned upside down. Secrets and spies are everywhere. Terra's heart is in tatters and the Foundation has new plans for attack.
The story is told through a few POV's, though more often through the eyes of Gryffin and Terra. There is a lot of history between them and their scenes are full of misunderstanding, uncertain emotions and bad situations. I felt sometimes the angst between them drowned the space opera elements, but I very much enjoyed watching them interact. Gryffin is probably the most stubborn character I have ever read and he never really comes across as overly 'likable'. He gets the job done and be damned at how it makes him look to others. He sees one path to fix things, refuses advice and rarely seeks out another way. Terra matches him on stubbornness. I connected with her character very early on in the book and always enjoyed her POV. She is a strong person but lets her heart rule her. Every character in Nemesis has a link, history and a purpose. I loved watching their personal stories unfold.
The pacing and unraveling of the plot is very good and keeps you feeling the right amount of tenseness through the action scenes. Watching the execution of plans was fun and threw in a few twists and turns I wasn't expecting. I did find myself becoming increasingly frustrated with Gryffin as secrets were revealed to him. I found him to be very selfish as he rarely saw problems from another's point of view. However, when you read about the life that he has been forced to live from an early age, I quickly forgave him on many occasions...It did not stop me wanting to throttle him a couple of times either.
But I believe that is what makes this book good. Connecting with characters emotionally and making the reader feel frustration and annoyance at their actions, for me, tells me it is worth reading and investing time in.
I have not read book 1 in this series, but I don't feel I lost any understanding for Nemesis as the author is skilled at weaving old details in to this story. History features heavily in the plot and helped me piece everything together. There are rivalries, old betrayals and decisions from book 1 that are answered for in this one. Though I would suggest getting the first book as this is not a standalone.
I rate Nemesis 3 out of 4 stars. It is a great book that is worth picking up. I have not read much Science Fiction in the past but this story is not overwhelming or full of technical terms that I thought I would drown in. There are a few editing and grammatical errors scattered throughout the book but not enough to distract from the story. If you enjoy Science Fiction with a touch of romance I would definitely recommend it.
I will be picking up Book 1 to see how the characters made it this far.
