Matthew Tysz's "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" is an engrossing fantasy story that explores Galen Bray's existence within the complex dynamics of the Kingdom of Voulhire. After fleeing the chaos of the Lands of the Princes, Galen ends up in Voulhire, where he inherits his late uncle's belongings and sets out on a trip that is entwined with the political conflicts and mystical aspects of the kingdom.

The book deftly intertwines several story strands to present a complete picture of Voulhire's complex life. Galen's character is captivating; his heeding of his grandmother's counsel provides a glimmer of hope amidst hardship. My personal favourite is this thread because it resonates with the main idea of finding goodness even in difficult situations.

The story is made richer by parallel plotlines including the coexistence of Cosmos and Caromentis, the mystery surrounding Lord Meldorath, and paranormal activities in Meldorath's castle. These various but related threads weave an intriguing tapestry that draws the reader in and makes for an engaging and delightful read.

The book bravely tackles topics of paedophilia and immigration from war-torn areas, among other important societal challenges. This gives the story more complexity and pushes it above the level of a typical fantasy story.

Because this book is the first of nine novels in the We are Voulhire series, it makes you excited for further adventures with Galen. The plot's open-ended structure allows for more development and investigation in novels to come.

The magical world of Voulhire is successfully brought to life in the novel by the author's writing style, which makes it an interesting and delightful read. The author's skill as a storyteller is evident in the way that different plot points are expertly integrated and societal issues are explained.

Positively, the map helps the reader visualise Galen and Rowan's journey, and the glossary improves understanding of concepts and names used in the book. A significant factor in the novel's overall well-edited quality is the lack of noticeable errors.

It's important to remember that the book has some somewhat sexually suggestive moments and swearing, despite its excellent qualities. It is therefore more appropriate for an older adult and teenage audience.

To sum up, "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" is a skillfully written fantasy that combines magical themes, adventure, and political intrigue. The book clearly gets a 5 out of 5 stars from my side because of the author's skill in crafting a vivid and intricate setting and an engaging protagonist. Adult readers who enjoy fantasy and adventure literature and are drawn to the prospect of a deep and comprehensive series should pick up this book, in my opinion.
