Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Matthew Tysz's epic fantasy book We Are Voulhire whisks us away to an imaginary kingdom full of political drama, magic, and a young man looking for a fresh start. The main character, Galen, flees from his war-ravaged homeland to the seemingly peaceful land of Voulhire. But things are not as perfect as they seem - dangers and secrets lurk right under the surface.
Galen gets tossed into this crazy political drama filled with schemes and rebellions happening behind the scenes. He has to figure out how to survive while trying to understand who he really is. Along the way, he partners up with Anya, this mysterious woman, and Eldus, a tough blacksmith who becomes a loyal friend. Galen starts uncovering all these sketchy secrets about the kingdom and the royal court. Pretty soon, he winds up right at the center of a growing battle that could rip the whole kingdom of Voulhire to shreds.
Tysz is crazy good at world-building here. Voulhire totally sucked me into its excellent blend of familiar and fantasy elements. You have these extraordinary cultures, different terrains across the kingdom, and all this deep history that shapes everything. The magic is also neat and does not overwhelm the story or characters. And, oh man, the characters! Tysz makes them all feel like real people dealing with tough choices and changes. I immediately cared about Galen and was rooting for him through all his ups and downs. You cannot help but cheer as he grows into a true hero! Even side characters like Eldus and Anya have depth and purpose. Eldus may act grumpy, but his loyalty shows, and Anya's mysterious nature kept me guessing.
One thing I did not like about the books was that the story's pacing can be uneven at times. The world-building starts off slow before hitting warp speed later on. Some big plot surprises are not revealed until late in the story. I wished for tighter pacing upfront to better clinch the overall direction.
Despite these minor quibbles, We Are Voulhire is a thoroughly enjoyable read. It is a captivating blend of adventure, political intrigue, and personal growth, perfect for fans of epic fantasy who crave a world brimming with potential. Therefore, I would deduct any stars and rate the book 5 out of 5 stars.
I would recommend the book to fantasy fans with a touch of political intrigue and complex characters.
