‘We Are Voulhire’ by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy story set primarily in a land called Voulhire. It has a number of different points of view, with chapters based on the lives of kings, lords, villains and ordinary men, among others. There were considerable conflicts in the book, both familial and more violent issues, which is something to be aware of if you are sensitive to gore and death.

The book tells the story of the conflicts happening in Voulhire, as well as in the nearby Lands of the Princes, where one of the protagonists, Galen, originates. Galen, recently arrived in Magnum Caelum to receive an inheritance from a long-lost Uncle has escaped the land which he called home and wants to find his happiness in Voulhire, but scheming characters and mysteries make it difficult for him. Lord Eldus was recently appointed lord of the village of Hillport, a village which had suffered betrayals from its previous two lords, and he aims to strengthen the economic status of the town and develop infrastructure there. Unfortunately, there are still forces at play trying to stop him from achieving his aims. The King of Voulhire appears to be losing his hold on the land, as more political unrest is caused by various forces at play. All these different stories slowly converge on each other. The different points of view make the story incredibly detailed and mysterious, as you don’t know how the story links up until you read more of it. Some mysteries are left intact at the end of the book – creating the desire to continue the series.

The book highlights inequalities in even the places lauded as developed and wonderful, as well as the difficulties faced when people are working behind your back to achieve something they desire. It was an incredibly enjoyable book, and I look forward to seeing what comes next.

One major strong point of this book was the editing process. The book has clearly undergone extensive editing to ensure there were no spelling errors or mistakes, it was truly a masterpiece in editing. I found no errors, ensuring there were no distractions from the details of the story.

While I do not have any major problems with this book, it is complex, detailed and sometimes confusing. However, fantasy books often are because of the world-building that is necessary. Because of this, coupled with the guide found at the back of the book which gives detailed explanations for many aspects of the story, I do not find it necessary to detract a star from the rating – therefore rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to lovers of fantasy, especially if they also like mysteries and conflict.
