We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies: A Review by Maggie Wilson

I enjoyed We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, written by Matthew Tysz. Right from the beginning, Tysz draws the reader in by offering a map to give a visual reference right before launching them into a very graphic scene that sets the tone for the rest of the book. Although, similar to classic stories such as J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, it would not be on my list to read to my six-year-old. The reason is that the language in this book is more appropriate for a mature audience due to sexually suggestive language and profanity (though, not overused). For example, an antagonistic character states, " I wonder: did I enjoy making her a woman half as much as I'm going to make your son a man?" (p. 33, para 1). While another character explains in an exasperated tone, "...eating, shitting- he had to wrap it up and babysit that demagogical cunt." (p. 280, para 6).

The opening prologue is fast paced and immediately catches the reader's attention by creating a visual of a magistrate obliterating a door using a human battering ram made up of guards. Matthew Tysz, has a style of writing that is easily envisioned by the reader. While each character is engaging in their way, the main character is read as a first-person narrative, while the other characters read as third person. I found myself invested in the main character and his journey, which made this an easy read on the very limited free time that I have to enjoy a good book. For the reasons mentioned above, I rate this book 4 out of 4.

Overall, I found this book to be exceptionally written and easy to read. Even though there was some profanity scattered throughout the book, it was done in a way that seemed appropriate for the character, or in describing the scene. Honestly, I cannot find anything that I did not like about the book.
