Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
"Some of the greatest knowledge has come from the study of lesser things". - Demetrius Waters
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book of an seven book epic fantasy series. It offers a multiverse narrative. The author will transport you to the built out kingdom of Voulhire through the pages of this book. The story revolves around two prominent characters in the book, Galen Bray, a young refugee from the Land of the Princes, sets out on an escapade to the properous Kingdom of Voulhire with the goal of succeeding after his great uncle's forgery and Lord Eldus Alderman, the newly assigned Lord of Hillport tasked rebuilding Hillport itself while uncovering the truth about the horrific crimes committed by the last two former rulers; Lord Orlin and Lord Meldorath.
I enjoyed the book in a few different ways. First of all, the idea is brilliant and unique. This is something I have never dared explored before. Second, the plot takes its time to build up, initially focusing on character and world building. This is a feature of the author's slow-build strategy that I find appealing and fond of. It draws readers in right way and builds gradually to a thrilling conclusion. Thirdly, the author has a very remarkable and distinctive writing style. Somehow, the writer is able to provide the readers with comprehensive information about this parallel reality. Every significant fantasy element is expertly weaved in a way that is both efficient and well-balanced overall.
I thought the author's original idea for the series was fantastic. But with that being said I would have like less points of view and subplots, especially in the first book of the series. I found it difficult to relate to or feel anything for the main characters as a result. For non-native English readers, embracing the concept of modern and medieval languages can also be a little difficult. However, this is hardly a problem for the typical reader.
There is mention of light child abuse in the novel, along with sporadic swearing. However, there aren't any implications of explicit scenes that young adult readers could find inappropriate. Professional editing was done on the book as i was unable to locate a single mistake.
For the reasons listed above, I will give this book a rating of five out of five stars. I will suggest this book to all adult and young adult advanced fantasy readers. Novices can also raise their comprehension skills by reading this novel.
