Title :Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Author: Matthew Tysz
A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first of nine books in the We Are Voulhire series. In this book, Galen Bray travels to Voulhire by boat seeking a better life at Magnum Caelum. On arrival he learns of his uncle's recent death leaving him as the inheritor of his house, a book on how to be a blacksmith and forge. He is one of the four sons of the Land of the Princes which signifies land where its inhabitants die by the sword or starvation. He thus takes longer to familiarize himself with the new land because all he knows is survival. Having met an aide called Rowan who helps him get to the forge and settle in he sets out for an exploratory tour with him to understand the place better oblivious to the disastrous events happening in other parts of the kingdom.
King Wilhelm assigns Eldus Anderman who was a former judge the role of the new lord of the underdeveloped fishing village of Hillport. Although the town gave off a serene vibe, it has suffered from the sins of the previous lords, Melodrath and Orlin with Melodrath’s the most feared one. It proves to be a difficult task for lord Eldus to change this underdeveloped town to the envisioned coastal hub thus harder to carry on Melodrath’s legacy of the mage experimenting magic on the townspeople. Riva Rohavi adds to the thrill of the book through their role as a merciless rebel group intermixing both mystery and suspense as readers delve into it to uncover the truth about Melodrath and the fate of Galen and Voulhire at large.
Matthew scripts in both third and first-person narrative differentiating Galen’s perception from the reality of Voulhire. By giving us a map very early, our eyes feast on it evoking our adventurous spirit so we delve deeper into fantasy as the author gradually unveils mysterious characters so the reader travels along on edge, hooked and anticipating the next move.it is a medium-paced novel that is fully fleshed prompting us to seek the sequel to feed our curiosity. Galen is presented as a boy “slowly becoming a man” and a protagonist we can relate with as he “ finds himself lost inside his own heart, struggling to discover who he truly is.” It is refreshing to grow with him in the plot through his innocence and ambition mingled with caution.
I am rating this book with 4 stars out of 4 because it is amazing, moving one from the real to the fantasy world with vivid description of events. I recommend it to lovers of fiction, science and fantasy genres.
