Sarette is a normal teenager struggling to figure out what college to go to and what she wants to do with her life. Unfortunately, she’s starting to think she’s crazy. You see, she thinks people are watching her. Then she starts hearing voices and seeing things. Just when she is about to commit herself to an insane asylum, she learns that she is a fey princess. Elwin has come from the fey realm to guide her in her journey to the fey. Not everyone wants her there, and her way is fraught with danger. Elwin’s job is to make sure she arrives safely.

Meanmna: Book One of the Daearen Realms by Emmy Gatrell is a science fiction/fantasy novel. The book is about 267 pages and makes for a quick read. The story is balanced with the right amount of action interspersed with lighter moments and descriptions of the fey world.

Everyone loves a good Cinderella story, and I’m no exception. I enjoyed reading about Sarette. I loved learning about the fey world along with her. It’s interesting to me to see someone ruling a world so completely different from their own. I like to see two worlds come together as it always seems like the kingdom ends up getting the best of both worlds.

Unfortunately, there was nothing in this story to set it apart from all the others of the same genre. I have read other stories about the fairy world, and I didn’t find anything different in this one. There are five types of fairies based on the elements; fire, earth, air, water, and spirit. There are dark fey, and there are light fey. These same elements found in other stories make the story predictable although still enjoyable.

There was an element of romance involved in this story which was also predictable. Girl meets boy. Girl and boy fall in love but can’t have each other. Boy and Girl find a way to be together. I wish that Ms. Gatrell had found a small way to make this book unique and stand out.

The story is geared more toward older teenagers and adults looking for an easy read. While the story is uncomplicated and easy to read, there is some language that prevents me from recommending this to younger teenagers. Also on the romance side, while there is not a sex scene, there are several intimate moments that wouldn’t be appropriate for younger audiences.

Overall I rate Meanma a 3 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed the book. I might even continue on to the second book. I found a few minor errors in the story line, but all in all the book was well edited. However, the story was too predictable to earn a full 4 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories about the fey world with an element of romance to it.

I love YA so of course this book appeals to me. Especially since its about a girl discovering she's some kind of fairy princess. I'm sold!

Great Review! ?

It was good. I enjoyed reading it. It just wasn't unique. But sometimes even stories that are predictable are fun to read.

I like the sound of this but do agree that it is not very unique. Unfortunately the Throne of Glass series has put me off fairies for a while so I won't be racing to read this but I liked your review :)

I find the title "Meanmna" quite puzzling. No wonder, therefore, the review has it mis-written at the rating point as "Meanma." Does the title have any bearing on the story? Personally, I like descriptive titles that give an indication of the story line. Place name titles are okay.

Fairies were once my favourite. But growing up I left reading them. My sister might find it interesting. Will get it for her. Thanks for the review though.

Thank you for your review! I personally enjoy reading books about the different elements so they may be a good one for me. Although, I do enjoy a unique twist, it will not deter me from trying the book out.

I am a big fan of YA (well I am a YA). I have read and watched many things about the fairy world but it has never been the main focus of those tales that I read so this seems promising. Thanks for the review.
