Review of Ethuin: The Beast of Purple Sage
“Ethuin: The Beast of Purple Sage” by Keagan Trischman is a captivating sci-fi fantasy novel that delves into a world filled with magical creatures and mystical powers. The narrative centers around the perilous presence of a mysterious “Beast” haunting the town of Purple Sage, causing the disappearance of both cattle and townsfolk, leaving the community in a state of confusion and fear.
Eliza Dolan, a skilled naturalist, is enlisted by the affluent businessman Simone Chenevert to unravel the enigma surrounding this malevolent creature. Eliza joins forces with Simone and Cooper Bohannon, a seasoned hunter, to embark on a quest to uncover the truth behind the “Beast.” However, their expedition takes a dangerous turn when Cooper is gravely injured during a confrontation with a wild feline, forcing the trio to retreat to the safety of the town.
Amidst their ordeal, Eliza and Cooper develop unspoken feelings for each other, adding a layer of complexity to their relationship. Meanwhile, in Purple Sage, Eliza finds herself at odds with Reverend Francis Kramer, a devout man who leads her to a peculiar location—a charred chapel—where she comes face to face with the dreaded “Beast,” an encounter from which no witness has ever returned alive. The fate of Eliza, the true nature of the “Beast,” and the resolution of the town’s plight form the crux of the narrative, intertwining themes of survival, mystery, and romance.
Trischman skillfully crafts a compelling storyline populated with a diverse cast of characters, including Jess, North, Sonney, Henway, Dolly, Brook, Hans, and others, each contributing uniquely to the unfolding drama. Among these characters, Cooper stands out for his rugged exterior juxtaposed with a tender demeanor towards Eliza, while Sonney adds a touch of humor that lightens the narrative. The interactions between Sonney and Cooper are particularly entertaining, often resulting in humorous clashes. Additionally, characters like Arch and Bo, endowed with mystical abilities, add an intriguing dimension to the story.
The author skillfully portrayed the romantic moments shared between Eliza and Cooper. I eagerly anticipated the moment when they would finally confess their feelings to one another. The author's world-building is commendable. I was captivated by the beauty of Purple Sage and felt transported alongside the characters.
The novel’s plot is engrossing, maintaining a steady pace that keeps readers invested from beginning to end. Trischman adeptly avoids moments of stagnation, ensuring that the narrative remains engaging throughout. As such, there is nothing to dislike in this well-crafted tale.
I would rate “Ethuin: The Beast of Purple Sage” 5 out of 5 stars for its captivating plotline, rich character development, and seamless blend of sci-fi and fantasy elements. It is a must-read for enthusiasts of the genre, offering a thrilling and immersive experience from start to finish.
