Paula Grover’s The Hermit Gryphon is a fictional fantasy story set in five sun revolutions after Sunsky became the oracle queen. Talona tried to claim Deathgrip had made her commit the atrocities of her reign of terror, but nobody believed her. Her name was shortened to Tal, and she was to receive soul healing from Light Healer. Tal has no political power, but her people hate her. Light Healer suggests that Tal receive direction from Snow Wing, who lives at the Forest Lake Nesting Site. Tal’s father, King Sun Quest, arrives to escort her, but Tal rebels and flies away from her father, mother, and Light Healer.

Tal lands in the hills known as Gargoyle’s Scrubland. She hears a growl and discovers a lone gargoyle. Despite assuring him that she intended no harm, a gaggle of gargoyles assaulted her. As they are attacking her, Tal notices they are doing the same to the other gargoyle. After the attack, Tal and Griper were unable to fly. The pair were outcasts. Griper knows where Forest Lake is and leads Tal until Snow Wing stops them. Despite knowing the laws of Forest Lake, Tal’s superiority leads to trouble. She had only been in Forest Lake for a few hours before she was arrested and placed in jail. Can Talona the Terrible’s soul be healed?

The Hermit Gryphon follows Tal’s journey to redeem herself by oppressing the other gryphons. The character's development was exceptional. I was able to see the emotions from Tal’s perspective, which revealed her distorted thoughts. Her journey for healing shows a steady transformation from an angry outcast. The friendship she receives from Griper is essential for both. The vivid details in the unpredictable plot made it easy to envision each moment.

There is nothing that I would change about The Hermit Gryphon. The book’s editing was perfect. The themes of acceptance, trust, and forgiveness are easy to understand. The illustrations were breathtaking in their details. Despite being considered a sequel, I found this novel could be read as a standalone story. Therefore, I rate this book five out of five stars.

The Hermit Gryphon will appeal to fantasy readers who like stories of character growth. Since there are no profanity or explicit scenes in the book, even younger readers can enjoy this magical story.
