Review of Nightlord: Sunset
Sunset: Book One of the Nightlord Series.
Author: Garon Whited.
Eric is one moment a working man and the next a vampire-wizard riding an immortal horse with a mind-reading knife for protection. He was an ordinary physics teacher in an ordinary town. One morning, he woke up with a hangover in the home of a beautiful woman called Sasha. She gave him blood to drink, causing his body and soul to start changing into a 'Dayblood' vampire. As a reader, I found it astounding that he just took this in his stride, as if it were 'another day at the office', but in this supernatural story, anything is possible. To avenge the killing of Sasha, he finds himself in the land of her killers, a land of wizards, elves, medieval walled towns and more.
Despite the sinister start, the book lightens up in this land of magic, and I find similarities to 'The Lord of the Rings' in this world within a world.
Various women came into his life, including Sasha, Utai (later Shada), and Tamara. His misogyny, although this word might be too strong, annoyed me. Various women (including a 'whore') tended to his needs, bathed him, fed him, carried 'his child', and even called him 'my Lord': although I am not a particularly 'woke' person, I found these instances a tad out of date.
It would have been great if the book had been shorter, as his adventures became tedious. This is my opinion, and there are probably plenty of people who would relish every page of this 1116-page volume. It would make an excellent present for an older teen or young adult.
Despite my complaints, this book is well written, would stimulate a young mind, and develops nicely towards the final crescendo. However, due to some nightmarish imagery and sexual connotations, it is not suitable for children. I award it a 4 out of 5 star rating for all these reasons. As it is titled 'Book One', there are others to look forward to in this series.
