Sent to Watch, the novel by David J. Lebenstein, is a riveting tale that seamlessly blends elements of historical fiction and science fiction. The story takes place in an alternate universe where multiple Earth-like planets exist and a group of characters lead double lives as spies. Their primary objective is to covertly monitor and record the technological and cultural advancements of different nations on Earth, all while avoiding any interference that could potentially affect the course of history. Set against the backdrop of the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo, this intriguing narrative takes readers on a thrilling journey through a world of espionage, intrigue, and adventure.

Lebenstein demonstrates his impressive storytelling abilities as he expertly guides the main characters, Unni, Ori, and Urelt, through the intricacies they face. The characters are multi-dimensional and relatable due to their unique personal and professional obligations, rather than being mere agents. The novel effectively balances their work and personal duties as their loyalty to the Noninterference Protocol and their natural inclination to protect Earth 48 from an impending alien threat intersect.

I was intrigued by how science fiction books were intertwined with real-world history and events. I particularly enjoy reading books that explore the backgrounds of influential figures, such as politicians. This enhances the book's appeal and helps me connect with the characters better. Furthermore, I found it captivating how the author included science fiction concepts that are theoretically possible but not yet realized. For instance, characters in the book used probabilistic simulations to predict future events, which was intriguing.

I cannot seem to find any aspect of this book that fails to captivate me. The author's writing style is both intelligent and engaging, making it difficult to put the book down. Furthermore, the editing work was executed with the utmost professionalism, as I failed to detect any grammatical or typographical errors. As a result, I am compelled to rate this literary masterpiece a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.
