“We Are Voulhire: Matthew Tysz’s “A New Arrival Under Great Skies” is a thrilling work of fantasy that stands out for the depth and complexity of its world and characters. The novel follows the story of the protagonist, Galen Bray, a young man who receives his uncle’s forge in the vast and enigmatic country of Voulhire. For as the story follows Galen through his new life, the reader is immersed in a world of magic, politics, and unique personalities.

I believe that one of the most successful aspects of the novel is the setting. Tysz methodically builds Voulhire with such detail that it feels real. The vivid descriptions of the settings, from the lively Magnum Caelum to the mysterious corners of the land where magic rules are apparent and seem to draw the reader right into the chosen atmosphere. The attention to detail is also applied to social and political situations within Voulhire, which creates depth to the plot.

The characters are another strength of the story. Galen is a believable main character whose transition from confined environment to the world unknown is exciting and touching. The protagonist is accompanied by an ensemble that has their own backgrounds and agendas, which adds depth to the story. Most importantly, the evil Lord Meldorath and the elusive and powerful Orlin are two characters that give the readers something to look forward to as they flip through the pages of the book.

The writing style of Tysz is clear yet full of imagery mixing detailed descriptions with fast-paced dialogues. The action of the plot is properly balanced and does not suddenly throw the reader into the middle of big fears and goals of the characters. This means that the book is best read as an introduction to the series, as the following books are suggested by teasing references and loose ends.

However, I can detect several flaws in the novel. It does get a bit heavy at some points with regards to explaining things about the world which are important to the story. Some of the readers may be overwhelmed by shifting from one character’s perspective to another in the succession which after all assists in expanding the width of the plot. However, even though the book is characterized by a splendid level of detail, some of the developed plotlines could be more profound to contribute to the desired effect.

Overall, “We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies” has great potential to be an interesting series of adventures based on this first episode. Matthew Tysz provides a piece that fantasy lovers will deem worthy of the dive since there are so many opportunities for further endeavors in the world presented therein. For the readers interested in a new fantasy series this book would be on mark and is worth the try.
