The Elf Coup can be categorised as a fantasy thriller. It is the third instalment in Jordan David’s series, The Magi Charter. The book follows the protagonist, an elf named Noel Night, on his new adventure in the North Pole.
In this book, Santa Nicholas is off on his honeymoon when Krampus sends a threatening message to the North Pole. The elves are panicking since Santa Nicholas cannot be located. Noel has finally joined the Elf Council and he is informed that he is the only elf who can protect the North Pole from a new threat. Noel is supposed to protect the elves from a coup that is being planned by Mistletoe Green, the main antagonist in this story. However, before Noel can begin his training, the Elf Council has a secret mission for him. Noel is the only one who can find a mysterious object that will aid Mistletoe in his endeavour. Will Noel be able to locate the mysterious object? Will he be able to stop Mistletoe Green’s coup? Will Santa Nicholas be found before Krampus wrecks havoc on the North Pole? All these questions will be answered in this amazing book. No spoilers.
The author uses an amazing style of writing that ensnared the reader from the first chapter. He writes from different perspectives ranging from Noel Night's to Mistletoe Green and Evergreen Pines. These characters help drive the story and make the book impossible to put down. The author continues this series inserting humour in the various names he chooses for the elves. He writes the first chapter without Noel’s point of view. As a reader following the series, this adds to the suspense and made me want to read just a little bit more. The change in "character perspective" made me compare this book to Rick Riordan’s, The Mark of Athena.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because the story was amazing from beginning to end and the tempo just kept building up, until the climax at the last page. I did encounter a few spelling errors, but they were so interspersed that they never affected the rhythm of the book. They were fewer than in the previous book and did not figure into my rating.
I would recommend this book to all fantasy thriller fans, especially teenagers. This book will definitely enhance the reader’s imagination. The only thing I did not like about the book was how short the book was, but I look forward to reading the next book.
