Review of ALAM Beginnings
Akil O. Smith’s "ALAM Beginnings" is a captivating blend of science fiction and coming-of-age drama, set against the backdrop of interstellar conflict and the quest for identity. The story revolves around Tiyshio, a young boy destined to be the Alam, or savior, of the Zorians, an alien race embroiled in a war with the Rigions. The narrative’s strength lies in its rich world-building and the deep emotional journeys of its characters, particularly Tiyshio and his friends.
The plot begins with Tiyshio and his guardian, Kevin, seeking refuge on Earth amidst the chaos of war. On Earth, they blend in among the human populace, hiding their true identities. Tiyshio navigates the complexities of high school life, forming friendships with other alien races who share his predicament. One of these friends is Shawn, who quickly becomes his best friend. Shawn’s tragic backstory, having lost both parents and being raised by his guardian, Kirk, adds depth to his character and the narrative.
The story takes a thrilling turn when Tiyshio starts having visions of death and destruction. These premonitions become even more troubling when Shawn discovers that his mother, whom he believed to be dead, is actually alive and is coming for him. This revelation sets off a chain of events filled with deceit, secrets, and a brewing war, putting Tiyshio and his friends’ loyalties and friendships to the test.
Smith expertly weaves together themes of friendship, loyalty, and the quest for truth. The characters are well-developed, each with their own unique backstories and motivations that add layers to the story. Tiyshio’s burden as the savior of his people contrasts with his desire for a normal life, creating a compelling internal conflict. Shawn’s journey to discover the truth about his mother and the ensuing emotional turmoil add further complexity to the narrative.
The book’s execution is flawless, showcasing Smith’s prowess in storytelling. The pacing is well-balanced, maintaining a sense of urgency and suspense throughout. The prose is clear and engaging, making it accessible to both young adults and adult readers. Despite the minor errors proving to be professionally edited, these do not detract from the overall quality of the book.
In conclusion, "ALAM Beginnings" is a masterfully crafted tale that seamlessly blends elements of science fiction with the universal themes of friendship and self-discovery. Akil O. Smith has delivered a "5 out of 5 stars" read that leaves no room for negative critique, making it a must-read for fans of the genre.
