Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a gripping science fiction novel that dives into a world controlled by artificial intelligence (AI). The story follows Kim, a bright young woman who landed a coveted job at the Artificial Intelligence Company five years ago. Initially thrilled, Kim dreams of climbing the corporate ladder and working with the most advanced AIs. However, the initial excitement fades as she gets bogged down in routine tasks. Life outside of work is equally restrictive. Kim lives in a bland house and wears a limited colour palette of gender-neutral clothing. Every aspect of life, from food choices to friendships and entertainment, is controlled and monitored by the AI and the Hierarchy, a ruling elite. Privacy is nonexistent, and any deviation from the established norms is harshly punished. Kim's world flips on its axis when she meets her newest AI project, Kimberly. Training these AIs becomes just another monotonous part of her tightly controlled life. Everything from dating to meals follows a rigid set of rules; existence feels like a pre-programmed routine. Kim desperately craves freedom and individuality. A chance encounter with her impulsive best friend, Shan, throws everything into chaos. Shan's rebellious streak often lands them in trouble, but this time the consequences are far more severe.

The book's title is genius, and the first-person perspective drew me in immediately. I felt like I was experiencing Kim's journey alongside her. The author's writing is engaging, and the world-building is impressive. Kim is a compelling character whose frustrations and desires resonate with the reader. We experience the world through her eyes, feeling the crushing weight of conformity and yearning for a life with purpose. Her journey of self-discovery is both inspiring and thought-provoking. The themes of freedom and privacy are timely and thought-provoking. I appreciated the slow-burning tension and the way the author built up to the climax.

I have no criticisms of this book. The book is exceptionally well edited. I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. The novel raises intriguing questions about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. As AI technology continues to advance, it's important to consider the ethical implications and potential for misuse. The book allows us to explore these issues in a fictional setting, sparking discussions and critical thinking. This book is a captivating read for anyone who enjoys science fiction with a touch of social commentary. It's perfect for fans of dystopian novels.
