Review of Roan
5 out of 5 stars.
"Roan: The Tales of Conor Archer’ by E. R Barr is a wonderful urban fantasy novel that has elements of Irish and Native American mythology interwoven into the plot. The plot revolves around Conor Archer, a young musician from Chicago, and his experiences change after a mysterious event and the death of his mother. Touched by her words, Conor goes to Tinker’s Grove, Wisconsin, to find his roots and destiny. The town has a feeling of mystery, and Conor finds out that he is related to a family of wizards. He now has to deal with evil characters within the society, which are portrayed by the evil Dr. Drake who uses codes of genetic science for evil doings. The exposition of this novel by E. R. Barr is rich in both the narrative and the creation of the characters and the setting, which makes it an intriguing read till the last page of the book. Ultimately, “Roan” is a rip-roaring tale filled with mystery, myth, and personal growth.
E. R. Barr weaves an intricate Celtic and Native American setting with myth and mystery making the story here vivid and compelling. The author’s descriptions are very elaborate, which greatly helps the reader imagine everything – the noisy streets of Chicago, the attractive main character, or the magical Tinker’s Grove. The culture and folklore aspects combined with urban fantasy make for an enchanting read.
Conor is a realistic leading character who has to face some private tragedies and the process of his transformation. It is very touching and invigorating to watch him grow from an average high school student to an important hero noted in an old prophecy. The minor characters including Aunt Emily and other persons in Tinker’s Grove contribute to building up the thematic depth.
These shifts in the plot are smooth and well-timed thus keeping the reader engaged, it is a book that one cannot easily set aside. Myths, legends, and contemporary problems are interconnected most skillfully, which makes the book fascinating to read. The evil plans of the antagonist, Dr.Drake, and his evil schemes appeal to the sense of danger and make the game more important because of the risks involved.
Despite the compelling narrative, "Roan: There are just a couple of slight negative features of the short story “The Tales of Conor Archer”. There are choices some readers may consider overdone that conjugating both Irish and Native American mythology in such a complex way; readers who are not familiar with these mythologies will have a hard time. However, it has several subplots and secondary characters that, at times, may give the viewer confused impressions about what the film is really about. But, of course, these aspects do not affect much the general, overall, enjoyableness of the book. Despite some view of the plot as easy to predict, the skillful narration by E. R. Barr and the detailed setting help make “Roan” as lively and interesting as it should be, hence giving it a full 5 stars.
There are no mistakes in this book and the style of writing is amazing, the editing of the book is also excellent overall this is one of the best books and deserves 5 stars.
In conclusion, what has been read is a masterfully written novel entitled “Roan” which will meet the expectations of those readers who are keen on supernatural mystery and cultural E. R. Barr’s ability to weave a compelling story with richly developed characters and an imaginative setting makes "Roan: Any reader should find “The Tales of Conor Archer” rather absorbing. This is a creative piece of work; it is interesting and leaves me wanting more, thus deserving all five stars.
