Matthaios and Sara grew up with each other, becoming best friends and eventually falling in love. However, a royal prince and a slave were forbidden to marry in ancient Roman times. Making it even more difficult for these two souls to be together is Matthaios’s cruel and twisted father, Caesar Titus. Although they know they can never wed, they cannot resist their feelings for each other, almost like they are destined to be together. Can these two find a way to be in each other’s arms? Or are they cursed to live their lives, desiring each other from a distance?

A Crown of Golden Leaves by Catalina DuBois takes the reader on a journey of love, lust, evil, and magic. The author elegantly intertwines the history of ancient Roman times, including Roman gods and goddesses, as well as a world full of magic and wonder. This story captivates and submerges the reader into the author’s imagination from page one.

From each character to each setting and even the smallest details, I was never bored with reading this story. Each character was well-thought-out and wonderfully portrayed. The author has a talent for providing enough detail to stimulate the reader’s senses without adding unnecessary details to make it drag on. Although this book is full of magic, prophecies, and fictional creatures, such as fairies, many historical details and names tell me the author took their time to make sure they were portraying history as accurately as possible.

As much as I enjoyed this book, I would have liked to see the author add more information at the beginning. I was slightly confused regarding those who had magical powers and either why or how they got them. Even towards the end, I still had a couple of questions, but they were more about smaller details rather than the plot.

This book is very well-edited. I found only a couple of slight punctuation errors, but they do not deter the reading nor do they cause the reader the need to slow down and reread to understand. Although I give this novel 4 out of 4 stars, I would caution readers who may be sensitive to books that contain sexual assault. Even though the author only used this to depict how ancient Roman times were in royal houses and no explicit details were written, readers need to be aware that it is mentioned.
