Voulhire; an ever-growing and prosperous kingdom. Desperate to escape his war-torn district, Galen Bray decides to leave his homeland to pursue his journey to Magnum Caelum; the capital city of Voulhire. He inherits his uncle's blacksmithing business while meeting various interesting people. How will he manage to fit in this new homeland? More so, how will the seemingly perfect Voulhire survive the chaos that is rising?

We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, written by Matthew Tysz, is a dark fantasy novel filled with plenty of complex characters and plot twists that will keep you engrossed in the text.

The chapters are written in an episodic format, which gives the effect of watching a television series. Each chapter focuses on a specific character and their place in this fantasy world. As a reader, I was captivated by the writing, as it was written from each character's perspective. Because of this, we get to see their point of view, which deepens the story as we relate to the character further. Along with that, Matthew Tysz's writing is phenomenal, as the level of detail included in the world-building makes the land of Voulhire even more fascinating. Paired with the wonderful character development, this novel is created to be truly engaging and riveting.

I also enjoyed the jolts of comedic relief, which contrasts with the grim realities shown in the book as it is a dark fantasy novel. The humor is unlike any I've seen before in books. With that being said, there are some crude choices used comically, which is why I do not recommend this book to younger readers. Rowan was particularly an interesting character with his installments of light humor in the novel, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also enjoyed how the various areas of this world interact with each other, such as the materialistic, spiritual, and magical elements introduced in this novel. We can even see this further with a map placed on the very first pages of the book that outlines the diagram of this unique fantasy world. I also noticed that there were no grammatical errors and the editing was superb.

Some unsatisfactory parts were that, due to the wealth of information, the novel became confusing in some areas. Matthew Tysz uses a lot of neologisms in this text, which can be hard to wrap your head around. Especially as it is the first book, there was plenty of new information to start with at the beginning of this series. However, I appreciate that there was a glossary at the back to explain the new language, which is familiar to this world. This made understanding the book easier, and it gave a good recap of the novel. I also wished that the ending was written better, as it was so abrupt. But I hope that Matthew Tysz left it open-ended to discuss what happens further in the series.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have rated it 5/5 stars. I recommend this book to those who appreciate the dark fantasy genre or anyone who enjoys action-adventure-style books. The age range in which I recommend this book is for teens, young adults, and adults, but younger audiences should not read this novel as there are levels of profanity involved. Matthew Tysz is an excellent author, and I will continue reading this series to see how the land of Voulhire develops throughout.
