Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies

Matthew Tysz's We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies introduces readers to a complex, multi-layered world through the eyes of Galen Bray, a young man fleeing the war-torn land of the Princes' Islands. He seeks a new life in Voulhire, a prosperous and mysterious kingdom. Galen inherits a forge from his uncle, whom he never met, in the bustling town of Magnum Caelum. His journey begins on a boat filled with diverse characters, setting a tone of hope and adventure. Meanwhile, the narrative also follows Lord Eldus, who tries to bring order to the chaotic city of Hillport, and Meldorath, a powerful and enigmatic mage with dark ambitions. As their paths intertwine, we explore Voulhire's political and mystical landscapes.
As Galen adjusts to his new life, he encounters the complexities of Voulhire, a place where magic and technology coexist, political intrigue, and ancient mysteries abound. He befriends local figures like the eccentric but wise Demetrius and the stern yet kind-hearted Rowan. The plot thickens with the introduction of Meldorath's sinister plans as he escapes imprisonment and begins to amass power, posing a threat to Voulhire's fragile peace. The novel deftly balances Galen's personal growth with the larger, impending conflict that looms over the kingdom. Tysz's narrative shifts between the personal and the epic, creating a rich tapestry of interconnected stories and characters.
I like many aspects of this book. Tysz's world-building is one of the most compelling aspects of this book. Voulhire is a land filled with vibrant cities, mystical landscapes, and diverse cultures, each with its own history and customs. The intricate details of the setting make it a living, breathing world that readers can easily immerse themselves in. The magic system is well thought out, adding depth and intrigue to the story without overwhelming the narrative. Additionally, the book's pacing keeps readers engaged, with a steady mix of action, dialogue, and introspection that builds suspense and investment in the characters' journeys.
I don't dislike any aspect of this book. The characters themselves are another highlight. Galen Bray's evolution from a naive newcomer to a more seasoned individual facing the complexities of his new world is portrayed with realism and empathy. Supporting characters like Demetrius, Rowan, and Lord Eldus add richness to the story, each bringing their own perspectives and motivations that enhance the narrative. Tysz's ability to create multi-dimensional characters who grow and change in response to the events around them is a testament to his skill as a storyteller. I didn't notice any errors while reading this book, which shows that it was exceptionally well-edited.
