Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
"We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz is an impressive entry into the fantasy genre. It blends imagination, science, and spirituality into a richly detailed narrative. This first book in the "We Are Voulhire" series introduces readers to a vast and intricately constructed world that promises to be the setting for a grand and thought-provoking saga.
The story centers on Galen Bray, a refugee who escapes his war-torn homeland and immigrates to the more advanced and knowledgeable country of Voulhire. As Galen navigates his new environment, he learns about the complexities of his new home. He unravels the deeper truths about the world and humanity's relationship with the universe. The plot is, moreover, driven by Galen's journey of discovery, intertwined with themes of gratitude, hope, and the ambitions of those around him. The author develops threads along Galen's adventures with captivating storylines in two co-existing worlds - Cosmos and Caromentis, the supernatural events unfolding in Meldorath's castle, and much more. These interconnected events drive the plot, making the book a gripping read.
Matthew's writing is immersive, with a strong emphasis on world-building and philosophical reflection. The author's background in history and psychology is evident in the detailed descriptions and meaningful exposition that permeate the narrative. While the story does not begin with immediate high-octane action, it sets a thoughtful and suspenseful tone, gradually building up tension and intrigue.
Along with well-developed characters, the themes of hope, gratitude, and the complexity of human ambitions resonate throughout the story. Galen is a relatable protagonist whose growth and learning process are portrayed with care and realism. The supporting characters are equally well-developed, each with their motives and complexities. The inhabitants of Voulhire are portrayed as advanced and knowledgeable, yet their intentions vary, adding layers of conflict and depth to the story.
However, the book's introductory nature could have been better. Apart from that, everything was fine, and there was nothing to dislike. Nevertheless, Matthew's enthusiasm and love for his creation shine through, making it clear that this is a labor of passion and dedication. The editing of the book also conveys the same sentiment. I would rate this book of the "We Are Voulhire" series 5 out of 5 stars.
Overall, "We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies" is a promising start to what appears to be a complex and expansive series. Fans of fantasy who appreciate rich world-building and imaginative storytelling will find much to enjoy in this book. It may require some patience, but it's an intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging story.
