"We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz Matthew Tysz's "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" transports readers to the fantastical kingdom of Voulhire, where political intrigue and magical mysteries abound. The novel begins with the Emperor of Lullabies, who gifts his sons four islands, known as the Lands of the Princes, to divert their ambitions away from his throne.

This act sparks constant warfare among the princes, sending desperate fugitives fleeing to Voulhire and causing turmoil, leading the Voulhire king to restrict immigration. Amid this chaos, we meet Galen Bray, a twenty-eight-year-old from the war-torn Lands of the Princes. Inheriting his late great-uncle’s forge in Voulhire, Galen is granted citizenship and escapes to his new home, setting the stage for his adventures.

Tysz excels at world-building, painting a vivid picture of Voulhire’s landscapes, culture, and conflicts, making Galen’s journey deeply immersive.

Galen’s character is immediately likable, especially in his effort to follow his grandmother’s advice: “See the good in everything, and the best of it will find you.”

This positive outlook shapes his experiences, drawing readers into his story. Tysz’s portrayal of Galen is both relatable and engaging, ensuring readers are invested in his fate. The narrative is rich with subplots that enhance the main storyline.

The existence of two parallel worlds, Cosmos and Caromentis, the mysterious eviction of Lord Meldorath, supernatural events in Meldorath’s castle, and the enigmatic gift of a lactis iron rod to Galen by a mage are just a few of the intriguing elements that keep the plot dynamic and gripping.

Tysz weaves these threads together seamlessly, creating a complex and enthralling narrative. In addition to its fantasy elements, the book also addresses serious issues such as pedophilia and immigration, adding a layer of social commentary that deepens the story’s impact.

Tysz handles these topics with sensitivity and insight, enriching the narrative beyond its fantasy setting. The book is exceptionally well edited, with a smooth flow that enhances the reading experience. As the first in a series of nine novels, "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" sets a high standard and leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment.

Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. for its captivating plot, well-developed characters, and intricate world-building. While the book contains mildly sexually charged scenes and occasional profanity, making it unsuitable for younger readers, it is highly recommended for adult fans of fantasy and adventure.

Matthew Tysz’s "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" is a must-read for anyone seeking a richly detailed and compelling fantasy adventure. The promise of further adventures with Galen in the subsequent books of the series is an exciting prospect for fans.
