Review of The Sword of Aether
The sword of Aether takes a thrilling glance into the world of magic, power, rivalry, and the lives of the Chosen in the battle for survival, power, and supremacy. The story unfolds with Odmund saving Hugo from the Beggar’s End, where he worked tirelessly with very little and took him to the castle. In a parallel world, Merki, the huntress of Halstead, hunted for a stag in order to earn her place and follow Locke’s group out of Halstead, but instead she hunted Kade, whom she assumed to be a rebel Chosen. For capturing a rebel Chosen, Merki is ready to cash out her bounty based on the law of the King’s Bounty, which states anyone in possession of a rebel Chosen had to be granted escort and an audience to the king directly and commended publicly for the capture. As the group headed to Kellum, fate and destiny intertwine as betrayal and death lie hidden in their path. Can they arrive in Kellum amidst the dangerous terrain and beast? What will become of Kade and his mission? Will he overcome the forces within him that seek to destroy him and his world? Read the drama-filled book by Ania Bo to find out what happens in the world of magic.
The Sword of Aether is a captivating book that takes readers on different journeys within the mystic planet of Siran and centers on the royal home and the Chosen, who fight to protect the kingdom from the Night Judges and Pentaghast. The book explores themes of betrayal, love, loyalty, the eternal battle between light and darkness, and the struggle for power. The author masterfully balances action and thoughtfulness, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the story. The book also built its plot on the dynamic and vivid worldbuilding. For instance, the explanation of the terrain and the structures of the houses in the book makes it easy to picture and understand the book better.
One major appeal of the book is Ania Bo’s writing style; the author’s writing style is emotive, making the reader feel every word and every emotion that occurs in the dialogue. I find myself gasping and my heart doing a triple jump as I read the book since the writing style pulls the reader along as you read. One such case is the scene when Loure came back to Mere’s room, and the fear felt by Mere is well conveyed to the reader. Another beautiful scene is when Axel taught Kade how to control his abilities and become one with his power. The tension in the scene permeates out to me as a reader.
The tone used in the book is also dark and lyrical, thus painting a clear picture of the book’s plot and maintaining the suspenseful edge of the book. The pacing is arguably the perfect blend of fast-paced and slow reflective moments.
However, there are a few aspects of the book that I found less appealing. The complexity of the plot can sometimes be overwhelming, with numerous characters and subplots that can be difficult to keep track of. Also, the book moves from one topic and place to another, and this did not allow some parts of the story to be well developed, creating lots of loopholes enough to write another book. Additionally, some of the secondary characters could have been more fleshed out, as their motivations and back stories are not always clear, though interesting, and feel somewhat underdeveloped compared to the main cast. For instance, the characters of Hugo, Loure, Mere, Merki, and Derum could be more fleshed out and their stories explored instead of leaving them as just plot devices.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for its natural and coherent dialogues. The book's structure is well developed, with each chapter leading into a greater revelation, which gives the book a satisfying end. I recommend this book to fans of fantasy and adventure, as the characters and the well structured plot will amaze a lover of adventure and fantasy books.
