"We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz marks the beginning of an epic saga that transports readers to the kingdom of Voulhire. This book primarily follows the journey of Galen Bray, a young man escaping the war-torn land of the Princes to claim an inheritance in Magnum Caelum. Upon his arrival, Galen meets Rowan, his late uncle’s executor, who guides him in taking over his uncle’s forge. At the same time, the kingdom faces internal strife with the ever-looming threat of the Rohavians and the political machinations surrounding the appointment of Eldus Alderman as the new lord of Hillport by King Wilhelm.

Galen's story intertwines with that of Lord Eldus, a former judge tasked with transforming Hillport into an economic hub after the fall of its corrupt and magical former lord, Meldorath. The book weaves themes of inheritance, personal growth, leadership, and the constant struggle between trust and betrayal. It explores a richly detailed world where magic, religion, and politics are deeply intertwined. The narrative is episodic, providing a well-rounded view of the kingdom’s various facets, from the political tensions in the capital to the spiritual and magical undertones that influence everyday life.

I really like how Matthew Tysz developed his characters. Galen’s evolution from a displaced youth to a purposeful individual carrying on his uncle’s legacy is captivating. The detailed descriptions of the setting and the vivid portrayal of magical elements help create an immersive experience. The book’s episodic structure, where each chapter focuses on different characters, adds depth to the story, allowing readers to see the broader picture of the kingdom’s troubles and triumphs. The glossary and map included are invaluable tools that enhance understanding and immersion.

However, I did feel that the story’s pace was somewhat slow at times, particularly in the beginning. Additionally, the extensive world-building and numerous characters can be overwhelming initially, but as the story progresses, these elements become more manageable and add richness to the narrative. Despite these minor issues, there was nothing I disliked about this book.

"We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" is a brilliantly written book. It is flawlessly edited, as I found no errors while reading. The author’s skillful blending of action, magic, and political intrigue makes this book a must-read. I give it 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to fantasy enthusiasts and readers who enjoy complex world-building and well-developed characters.
This book will appeal to fans of epic fantasies, especially those who enjoy stories filled with magic, political intrigue, and richly constructed worlds.
