A young man from a modest background, Galen Bray, has recently discovered that his late uncle left him his entire estate. Galen is on his way to Magnum Caelum in Voulhire from his hometown, the Barren Islands, to take possession of it. He is thrilled by this great stroke of fortune—one he attributes entirely to the goodwill of his uncle, a relative he never had the chance to know. Row after row, mountain after mountain, the steep and narrow paths of the Barren Islands press in on you. Galen is determined to build a good life for himself in Voulhire, partly to assuage any survivor's guilt he might feel and partly to sustain the work his uncle started. To that end, he is getting settled into a cottage with the help of a kind young man named Rowan, who assists him, though the executor of the estate is actually Master Hans Orly.

At the opposite end of Voulhire, Eldus ascends to the lordship of Hillport. The king has faith that Lord Eldus can restore vigor to Hillport, a town long haunted by the sinister influences of the twin despicable lords, Orlin and Meldorath. The townsfolk are not yet capable of seeing the two ex-Lords in a light that wouldn't just sully the characters of Orlin and Meldorath. They regard the future with consternation. If Hillport had any vigor to restore, it would have been that the townsfolk had forgotten the terrible reign of the two lords.

Something I did like about the book was the magical powers that various characters have. Voulhire has mages, and some of them use their powers to hurt people. The novel features interesting characters and incidents that would keep any reader's attention.

I found the book faultless. It was pleasurable to read. The story had my full attention from beginning to end. I thought Galen was an interesting character. The novel features interesting characters and incidents that would keep any reader's attention.

I give 5 out of 5 stars to Matthew Tysz's We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies. A very nice addition was the glossary, which introduced readers to new vocabulary. The book's plot was so engaging that it held my attention all the way to the end, and it was easy to follow because of the author's straightforward writing style. The chapters are nicely organized, which makes the action move along without any awkward bumps. And I didn't find any grammatical errors in the book, so it's well-edited, too.

For readers who enjoy their fantasies with a healthy dose of action, I can recommend this book without reservation. However, if you are sensitive to swearing or the subject of child molestation, you might want to give it a miss, or at least read it with some stronger Spanx on your part.
