In the Heart of the Linden Wood by Ekta R. Garg is the perfect book for readers new to the fantasy genre. It is filled with magic, action, an enticing political plot and personal conflicts. The book takes on a classic format of the fantasy genre; in a time of desperation and a kingdom under threat, a group of unlikely companions is formed and they set out on an adventure, aiming to save the kingdom. During the course of the adventure personal conflicts and emotions emerge and are ultimately resolved, forging a stronger bond between the characters, allowing them to become unlikely friends.

Additionally, the beautiful writing of the book as a whole, but specifically of the characters allows the reader to form emotional attachments to the imagined individuals. While possibly cheesy, the theme of love is constantly present throughout the story, whether that be romantic love or the love of a mother, it is this which makes this book heartwarming.

However, it is a tale of loss and grief, following the aftermath of the death of a beloved queen and her heir. While heartbreaking to the king, her demise proves troublesome for the people of the kingdom of Linden. In addition to this, the people’s livelihood is at risk, as their woods, their main resource, mysteriously begin dying off. This crisis gives rise to political issues needing to be dealt with by a king already crumbling under the weight of his grief.

The recounting of this tale through multiple points of view allows for a deeper understanding of the individuals and their intentions. While this can be hard to follow, this story has done it in such a way that it is easy to follow and for the reader to know exactly which character is the narrator at any point in the story.

Overall, I rate this book a 5/5, due to its captivating plot, beautiful writing and inspiring characters. It is a captivating yet heartwarming tale of heartbreak, grief, courage and love.
